Audi S6 vs FTO

Postby Kace » Thu Apr 30, 2009 10:58 pm

Just spent a while filling in all mine and wifee details for a new quote on FTO on 123.ie

After adding everything, even down to our penalty points - guess what - they wouldn't quote me for the FTO

Changed the vehicle listed to an €80,000 Audi S6 - Quote €600 fully comp.

Go figure

All you TDI diesel queens are the same, constantly extolling the virtues of your VAG diesel telling us all how it's 'some yoke to go' etc. when all the time you're secretly dreaming of petrol powered 'S' Audi. :smt110

Went through a similar process the other night and got some interesting comp quotes.
Fiat cinquincento ~€270
FTO ~€650
RX8 ~ sub €600 IIRC
Holden Manaro GTS ~€750
And my favouite....Lamborghini Murcialago >€65k value as that was the highest bracket they had. Sub €1200 -still cheaper than the motor tax :!: All in all seemed like pretty good value considering rates are on the up.
I used to pay more on my 1.6 primera!

Believe me - I will never be extolling the virtues of our 1.9 TDI from a 'Go' perspective. The TDI looks good and feels great from a comfort perspective, but it's the real jungle juice for me every time.

all jokes aside, a Golf 1.9 Tractor DI with 130 or 150bhp would be an easier car to pick off a line of traffic in than an FTO.

Maybe if you were "granny overtaking" in 5th gear. But for my style of driving a Golf TDI wouldn't be quicker then a mivec'in FTO.

Granted it's a lot more fun in the FTO, but for example you never get pushed back into the seat by the acceleration on the FTO, the TDI has a narrow enough power band, but within that band, there's a load of torque and power.
0-60 times mightn't be great on them, but for real life driving, a 1.9 TDI can make easy and quick work out of overtaking.

I'm not saying the FTO is slow or anything, only that a diesel is less hard work.

[sarcasm]
Are you referring to a TDI or a TDI? Theres a big difference you know...
[/sarcasm]

It pains me to say it but I've found these oil burners a bit quick off the line at times.

Yes - thank God we've got the TD Red Eye - wouldn't be able to overtake anything otherwise !! :smt002

Through work I've gotten to drive a ridiculous amount of cars, and to be honest some of the fastest everyday cars - in terms of overtaking ability have been diesel.
We had a Mk4 Golf GT TDI that was mapped to 180bhp, while that doesn't sound like a lot, it definitely gave more of an impression of speed and ability than cars with much more bhp. don't know what the 0-60 would be, but the 30-70 (which happens more) was phenomenal.

What is it the yanks say? 'Horsepower sells cars, torque wins races' or something to that effect? Its a statement that can be picked apart anyway. Is there much of a cost differential between a GTTDI (or is that GTTDI?) and a TDI? Much difference in power / torque? Just curious to know what the selling factor is on the GT.

GT just gives you the GTI seats, skirts, wheels and lowered suspension. no mechanical differences I think.
Even a base Mk4 Golf could be had with the 130bhp or the 115bhp engine. and this can easily be mapped to higher bhps and torques!

From what I remember, there were a myriad of engine options on the Golf. In 1998, there was a TDI, a TDI (110) and a TDI(130)

Then it got confusing when the PD TDI engines came out, then a TDI was only 100bhp, and there may have been a TDI model with maybe 150bhp. some had 6 speed boxes, some had 5.

Surely the same bhp in a Golf as you had in the RRS can only be a good thing?
Add 50mpg to the equation...

I hate them but have to admit they have great torque. Drew owns a 1.9 TDI (red letters somewhere don't ask where) and the pick up in the final gears when he put the boot down took me by surprise. I kept quiet, always pulling the p1ss out of him over driving a golf so didn't want it seem like it had a plus. :D Oh, and apparently its a GTTDI, but only says TDI on the back, its the interior is the difference, don't know if that's the case or not but according to him it is.
