The 3.5l petrol option in the Vel Satis uses the same engine as the Z.

Think we already mentioned that the Vel Satis uses a detuned (241bhp) version of the 350Z engine.

The latest Zed uses a VQ35HR engine rated at 309bhp - only used in Nissan skyline and Infiniti models to date.

Are the blocks of the Vel Satis and Zed the same item?

Dunno re the blocks - never really into the Vel Satis

I was answering that.

Correct me if I'm worng, but as far as I'm aware the 245 HP rated Vel Satis is automatic. I would assume the bulk of the power loss is due to the auto box rather than intentional detuning. Unless that's measured at the fly.

An auto box wouldn't make any difference to flywheel horsepower - just at the wheels horsepower which isn't quoted by manufacturers.

The engine used in the top spec Vel Satis is almost the same as used in the Maxima and Altima - just detuned from the 350Z spec ( I don't know the exact details of how or why the Zed version has more power).
The Vel Satis also ran a 2l turbo and a 3.0l turbo diesel - was priced and specced by Renault to compete with 5 series BM's and E class mercs - at which IMO it failed miserably.

Figured it was something like that. Weird stuff, I'd love to know the reasoning behind detuning it.

This isn't an unusual route for a manufacturer to take. Many of them use less tuned versions of the same engine in their exec cars over their sports cars. Much of this is for reasons of comfort, refinement, economy and reliability as well as for other reasons, like in the case of the Vel Satis I imagine it was because of the transmission type and the fact the Vel Satis is FWD as opposed to RWD (with a 6speed box and LSD) in the Zed.

Correct - but it makes the Vel Satis, I think, the best second hand bargain on the market. Only a muppet would spend 5 series money on a Renault barge - but they exist.
I haven't seen any 3.5 versions for sale, but the 2.2D can be picked up for around 10 to 12k for a 5-6 year old. You'll probably get it for less, as I reckon most sellers woud not be bombarded with interest.

I like the Vel Satis a lot.

Thank you lads thank you,

What can i say i was in the mood the past week or so to take on numpty's that think they know best when they clearly don't, Easiest way to baffel them is tell the truth and use fact and figures as your friends then they can't compete :D If they had done their research or had even the slightist bit of knowledge about fto's then i probably wouldn't have been so in their faces but i couldn't help myself when they left themselves that open to ridicule. :D :D :D

I think these little twats who obviously have no clue about cars or about what a V6 Mivec engine is, need a face to face challenge with a few of our manual GPX's to shut them the hell up cause they just ain't getting the point!!!! A quarter mile, 5 a side, should do the trick! If they're based in England, which I presume they are, Daz I think you should put there webpage on the ftooc website, they could arrange this easier, and then we'll see who has bragging power! And even if a few tegs were involved well even better, cause the FTO's have 20, if not more, hp than these little pussycats too. God I hate bickerers!!! These little teenagers who think they know everything need a lesson, a lesson in what its really like to drive a car that looks good, has power, and that people actually respect and turn to look at, a car that people dont see as a boy-racer car, a car that has it all, and will always have it all, cause its original, and Fresh!!!!

Would love to but i can't remember my username and password fot the FTOOC maybe someone else who is on there regular might put up a post and also give the link to that thread then maybe some of the english owners will take them on and since there are at least 5 FTO's running with turbos( like mr bishi's seen on here recently for sale and richard batty's vr4 conversion.) that should kill them off completely. but even regular GPX GPvR and i'm guessing a GR would do the trick even.

Just copy and paste my earlier post in this thread from the last 1/4 mile sprint results against French Cars Ireland. These guys mostly ran stripped 106 GTIs and 306 GTI's and weren't within an asses roar of the FTO's.

I did do but therir is still one owner on there that says he has Quote-i say there slow because every encounter ive had with one ive minced it!-endquote

Then again this is the same owner who thinks the v6 sounds "tinny" and the the 4cly scooby sound the same as any other 4cyl car.

But i think due to one or two posts from them i may have upset them but it that can't accept an owner of another type of car they shouldn't slag it of in the first place.

Quotes
"Daz, have a Break. The ITR DC2 is a far better car all round then the FTO! "

"ok DAZ uv mad the point that your a big fan of the FTO. and were all fans of 106, mainly rallye.

but what made you join up to this forum?"

"im not saying that your not welcome or that your input isnt wanted but when this thread dies down as most of them do, will you be posting again on other subjects other than FTO?"

We're all going to be biassed towards cars we like, hard facts like 0-60 and 1/4 mile times can't be argued with, but styling and engine sounds are subjective. Don't let it bother you.

Hahaha, I can't believe one of them suggested that he likes the 106 for its looks.

Give me a break. I mean I know looks are subjective but come on, there's a line. That made me laugh.
