Wouldn't be unusual for the ITG or any other filter for that matter to get hot - are you saying the Filter is hot or that your engine is overheating?

The cold air intake pipe would be to decrease the temp of air going through the induction hence denser (more) air leading to a power increase. Wouldn't make any significant difference to the temp of the actual filter.

The ITG has good filtration qualities and sounds 8) .
You may have to clean and respray with the provided lubricant every few months to keep it in top order but its an excellent mod. A cold air induction will help but its not essential.
