screeching noise coming from wheels

Postby Baroncell » Wed Jul 27, 2011 6:59 am

Hey sup guys.. My name is Nick and i have a problem with my FTO and i HATE having probs with my car! When i hit the brakes in low speeds or maby close to 0
km/h i hear a screeching noise. I think is coming from the wheels but i am not sure. i hear the same noise but less when i try to turn the steering wheel, also in low/veryyy low speeds. in high speed i didn't noticed any sound. Maybe i can't hear it in high speeds cause of the engine sound 8)
ANY help or advise or solution or whatever.

P.S: i have taken my FTO for service 3 weeks ago and the mechanic told me that he checked everything and didn't need to change anything (e.g breaking plates, gearbox oil, belts etc)

Srr for my terrible English!

I would imagine its the brake pads like Dan said. They have a little metal clip embedded in them that comes to the surface the more the pad wears down, this scratches at the disc when they get down to a certain point, its a warning thing to let you know they need changing.

You may not notice the clip to be honest.

i have checked the brake pads with a mechanic and they are OK. not worn out. i i looked at them and they looked OK indeed.
i asked the mechanic about the problem and he just said there is nothing to worry. the sound is because the car is old! :?: :!: wtf (srr guys but i can't help it)
when i drove home i was going really slow (i was alone in the street at that time 8) ) and i hit the break petal several times to research the sound location
a little more. It sounded coming from the break pedal towards the wheels. so basically the sound was coming from inside the car (driver side) towards outside of the car --> wheel location (driver side)!
When i completely stopped the car i hit the break pedal several times again and i didn't hear the sound. so only in motion the problem exist!
So i don't think is a WD40 problem because if it was, the problem would still exist even when i stop the car and try the break pedal!

Any other things you guys recommend to check? or maybe do?

Thanks in advance,
Nick - Cyprus

Your mechanic sounds like a twat. If you are sure it's not the brake pads, is it a seized calliper? There are no stones stuck between the pad and the disk are there?

Also, tell me you didn't put WD40 anywhere near your brakes?

lol nooooo i didn't wd40 my stopping power :P
no stones, brake pads fine
the strange thing about this problem is that there is the same sound when i turn the sterring wheel. i mean wtf has the steering wheel has to do with braking...

It's definitely screeching not a knocking noise? And it only happens when you brake?

Who fitted your pads last? If the springs are missing or loose then that might cause the pads to rattle around and screech when turning or braking.

You can get second hand lowering apexi springs for cheap now about €50-60. Don't know what's it's like over there.
Join a fee local car clubs and have a look they might be able to point you in the right direction and save you and postage

I'm not talking about suspension springs, I'm talking about brake pad springs.

Which are cheap.

its your pads. my fto did this until i changed the pads. the reason it screeches goiing round a corner is because they are worn and will move slightly between the caliper and disk. Change your pads they are seriously cheap and even if its not them youll have new brake pads... but it sounds EXACTLY like what happened to my fto

If the pads are ok it just sounds like whoever changed the pads last didnt use copper grease.....this will stop the pad from sticking and vibrating at a high frequency (ie you screeching)take the pads out and apply copper gease to the BACK plates of the pads and the lugs on the caliper bracket, should sort your prob

If you read my post again...you put the copper grease on the BACK plate of the pad, nowhere near the friction surface, this is done in every garage...well should be for the reasons i have explained above.

Guys,

Mivecmad´s fix for this problem is correct and done in nearly every garage.
The fix is fairly common, im surprised you guys havent heard of it.

Could be a warped disc rubbing on the shield maybe,i have also used copper grease after fitting pads never gave any trouble.
